Always too short. Always incomplete. Summarizing people into a neat little paragraph is uncomfortable. Easier to show than tell. [play →](https://aryagarg23.com/play) · [writing →](https://aryagarg23.com/writing) Arya Garg 23. The number matters to me for many reasons. Why this website exists is in the [preface](https://aryagarg23.com/preface). I spend a lot of time tinkering with tech. Lately, meaning a lot of AI. I go deep on too many unrelated things to call any one a specialty. My strongest skill is grit. I guess like any 22 year old I'm healthmaxxing too. # Preface Sometime in May 2026, I randomly googled myself and was disappointed for two reasons: the information misrepresented my shape, and I was being confused with other Aryas. I wanted to chip toward fixing that. So this website exists to showcase all of my content. It also hosts discursive pieces like [Lighthouse](https://aryagarg23.com/lighthouse), which puts layers of everyday tech people never notice under a spotlight. Through making Lighthouse I realized the internet is now overrun by bots — dead internet theory is alive. So clearly I needed to be future-forward and design for robots to read this website too. Funny to say, but there was a fair deal of robot-centered design behind this architecture. Reading Citrini and Alap Shah's The 2028 Global Intelligence Crisis,[^*] I wanted the implications without all the methods — the volume made the material difficult to interact with. That's why the writing here has three layers: the story down the middle, the technical detail in blue, and the personal context in red. Designers pride themselves on their tools: the cold, exact calipers, the perfectly weighted pen, the thick, toothy paper. I am forever envious of that. [Tools](https://aryagarg23.com/tools) exist so I can emulate that in software — and edge out the designers, because my tools are easily shared. There's stuff that's hard to cluster. I threw all of that, randomly, in [Play](https://aryagarg23.com/play). [^*]: Citrini and Alap Shah, [The 2028 Global Intelligence Crisis](https://www.citriniresearch.com/p/2028gic), February 22, 2026. # Lighthouse I have noticed that society is increasingly automating information retrieval. This whole website is designed with that in mind ([preface](https://aryagarg23.com/preface)). Recently bot activity surpassed human activity on the internet[^*]. But unfortunately, this whole secondary internet, which outnumbers humans[^*], is hidden by design. This is a digital lighthouse of sorts; showing the automation to all of us humans watching from the surface. Below is a table of the agent visits this website could label, and what they looked at: ## What comes looking Below is a log of the software visiting this site, grouped into visits. Every row is one visitor: what it looked at, and when. It's worth a browse. You can watch a chatbot read an essay and its plain-text version back to back, or a scanner try a dozen addresses that were never here. The names are whatever the visitors called themselves, so don't take them at face value. [^*]: Bots accounted for 53% of all internet traffic in 2025, surpassing human traffic for the second consecutive year. Get a closed, simplified solid of the printed part to measure or simulate. Free, and nothing is uploaded. Use it: /gcode-to-stl · Source: https://github.com/Aryagarg23/G-Code-Assembler · Story: /writing/g-code-assembler ## What it does A slicer turns a model into G-code. This goes the other way. It reads the moves that print the part and rebuilds the solid they lay down. Each bead of plastic becomes a rounded strand as wide as the filament the move pushes out. The strands are joined into one closed surface, then simplified where the surface is flat. ## How to use it 1. Drop a .gcode file on the page, or pick one of the sample files. 2. Choose the mesh, the resolution, how much to simplify, and whether you want the part as printed (the default) or filled. The other defaults suit most parts. 3. Look through it layer by layer, then download the STL. ## What you get - A closed (watertight) mesh. Every edge joins exactly two triangles, so the volume is real and CAD, meshing and simulation tools can use it. - As printed (the default): walls, solid layers and infill exactly as the printer lays them down, infill gaps included. Filled: the part's outer boundary only, for volume and simulation. - A viewer coloured the way a slicer preview is: outer wall, inner wall, solid top and bottom layers and sparse infill each in their own colour, and the selected layer's toolpaths drawn on the cut. - Simplified so the surface moves at most 0.02 mm, which makes files about 4 to 7 times smaller. - The size, volume, layer count and height, bead width, filament used, and what was left out. - The original hackathon box mesh as an option, for comparison. ## G-code it reads FDM G-code from Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer, PrusaSlicer, SuperSlicer, Cura, ideaMaker and Simplify3D. It uses the comments these slicers write to keep only the part: start and end code, purge lines, skirts, brims, rafts, supports and wipe towers are left out. Files without those comments keep every extrusion. Arcs (G2 and G3), relative and absolute moves, extruder resets (G92), inches (G20) and volumetric extrusion (M200) are handled. ## How accurate it is Checked against the CAD models Kinetic Vision gave out with their MakeUC 2024 challenge, with Inside set to Filled (as printed, the volume is the plastic actually laid down, so it is lower): | Part | From the G-code | CAD model | | --- | --- | --- | | Square prism, volume | 62.25 cm³ | 62.50 cm³ | | Square prism, size | 24.99 × 99.99 × 24.98 mm | 25 × 100 × 25 mm | | 3DBenchy, volume | 15.44 cm³ | 15.55 cm³ | | 3DBenchy, size | 59.98 × 31.01 × 47.99 mm | 60 × 31 × 48 mm | ## Limits - Tops and bottoms can sit up to half a sample from their true height: 0.1 mm at the default resolution. - Detail smaller than a grid cell (0.3 mm by default) is smoothed. Fine resolution keeps more, but takes longer and makes bigger files. - The solid comes from the toolpath, so settings that change the toolpath, such as XY compensation, show up in the result. - Only FDM extrusion is read. Resin, laser and CNC G-code are not supported. ## Where it came from Arya Garg built the first version alone at MakeUC 2024 for the Kinetic Vision challenge, and it won the challenge. In 2026 it was rebuilt to run in the browser and to make a closed solid you can simulate with. ## Questions **Can I convert G-code back to STL?** Yes. Load the .gcode file here and download the STL. The mesh is rebuilt from the extrusion moves, so it is the part as the printer would lay it down. **Is the STL watertight?** Yes, with the Solid mesh. Every edge joins exactly two triangles, and the page says so after each conversion. The hackathon box mesh is not watertight. **Is my file uploaded anywhere?** No. The file is read and meshed in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server. **Does it work with Cura, PrusaSlicer or OrcaSlicer files?** Yes. It reads G-code from Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer, PrusaSlicer, SuperSlicer, Cura, ideaMaker and Simplify3D, and keeps only the part. **Why is the volume a little different from my CAD model?** The solid is built from the printed beads. Tops and bottoms can be up to half a sample off, small details are smoothed, and as printed (the default) the infill gaps count as empty. Set Inside to Filled to compare against a CAD model. **Is it free?** Yes. There is no account and no limit. The source code is on GitHub. # It was a spontaneous trivia night at Upside Cafe. My job is to work out how different changes could affect each other, then describe possible futures in enough detail that companies can plan for them. Spend all day doing that and you start expecting those futures in your own life. Weirdly, I might relate to method actors. The regular world feels bizarre. I initially wanted to hate on the current trajectory of automation, following Max Kemats's post about Muse[^upside-cafe-main-1] on the Foresight Lab's Substack. But I veered off course because of whiplash; whiplash between what I study and how people around me are actually living. What is whiplash........? I end up living in a pseudo-real world, majorly influenced by my work. In that world, inhumane automation is assumed. Perfectly optimized statistical modeling has distilled human joy out of daily life, and everyone is racing to optimize every bit of friction they feel. Asking an LLM is faster than working something out yourself, so eventually you stop trying. I spend so much time studying that possibility that I catch myself treating it as inevitable. Employment among 22-to-25-year-olds in highly AI-exposed jobs was about 19% below where it would have been if it had kept pace with less-exposed jobs through June 2026. That's a gap in payroll data, not a measure of how many jobs AI caused to disappear (Stanford[^upside-cafe-main-2]). More than fourteen thousand people have opted into the lawsuit alleging age discrimination in Workday's hiring tools (Mobley v. Workday[^upside-cafe-main-3]). California and other states have enacted chatbot-specific laws, though they cover different things and many haven't taken effect yet (Fenwick[^upside-cafe-main-4]). Kentucky and Florida have sued chatbot companies, alleging harms to children (Kentucky[^upside-cafe-main-5], Florida[^upside-cafe-main-6]). In April, the Senate Judiciary Committee voted 22 to 0 to advance the GUARD Act's restrictions on companion chatbots for minors (Roll Call[^upside-cafe-main-7]). The U.S. price index for computers, peripherals and smart home assistants rose 8.4% in the year to August 2026 (BLS[^upside-cafe-main-8]). Conventional DRAM contract prices nearly doubled in the first quarter of 2026, up 93–98%. That's the price manufacturers negotiate, not necessarily what you pay for a stick of RAM (TrendForce[^upside-cafe-main-9]). Data centers are also competing for electricity. PJM's auction for 2027–28 fell short of its overall reliability requirement for the first time, with data centers accounting for most of the increase in forecast demand. That is a shortfall against its reserve target, not a prediction of certain blackouts (PJM[^upside-cafe-main-10]). AEP Ohio now requires binding contracts and collateral from new data-center customers to cover infrastructure commitments (AEP Ohio[^upside-cafe-main-11]). Cloudflare found that humans accounted for 47% of requests for HTML pages on its network on December 2, 2025. Bots made up the rest (Cloudflare[^upside-cafe-main-12]). I built [Lighthouse](https://aryagarg23.com/lighthouse) so you could watch bots visit this site. And in the Fed's 2025 survey, 45% of adults aged 18–29 said they would cover a $400 emergency expense with cash or its equivalent, down from 51% in 2022 (Fed[^upside-cafe-main-13]). Then the environment. I sat in John Sterman's En-ROADS workshop at MIT last week. The baseline in that session was 3.3°C of warming by 2100. A carbon price moved the number more than anything else we tried. Fusion didn't change the result in that exercise. An hour earlier, a panel on protecting the coast had a tone of inevitability; one panelist said we should not discount having to move away from coastal areas and evacuate them. Seawalls bend the water round the rich part of town and the flood hits the poor part harder. Florida's state-run insurer held 266,231 policies at the end of August 2026 (Citizens[^upside-cafe-main-14]), and Congress passed another temporary extension of the federal flood insurance program in September (P.L. 119-103, section 139[^upside-cafe-main-15]). Companies use this research to plan. But I find it impossible to disconnect from these worlds even after work. As an engineer, I want to find the root cause, solve it and find the next thing to tackle. But I can't fix all of this. I just keep finding more signals to believe that the world is getting comprehensively fucked. At the En-ROADS workshop, the scientist running it said 3.3°C of warming by 2100 "would be nothing short of catastrophe", and then: "I'm a scientist. Scientists don't use language like catastrophe very often." ### A spontaneous trivia night What pulled me out of it was a spontaneous trivia night at Upside Cafe. Someone got a question wrong and everyone was laughing. For a couple of hours I wasn't thinking about work. Part of me feels delusional. Part of me wants to cherish the last bits of joy I'll probably get, because I forecast a really shit world. Part of me wants to stand on the table and scream at everyone to get ready for the revolution. That's the whiplash. ### Who owns automation? What makes me angry about automation is who owns it. Most people don't have the hardware or knowledge to run their own models. When you use a model through a company's service, you can't inspect how it works or see what it was trained on. I think about Linus Torvalds, or the women at Raytheon who wove the Apollo computer's memory by hand, and wonder how we ended up here. So much of the internet, the data and now AI is controlled by a few companies. I kept blaming some VC-backed 19-year-old who sees the benefit of what they are building from their own perspective and ignore what it might do to everyone else. I ran a little test with 5-6 agents trying to impersonate a young founder. All of them surfaced the same problem: someone else in their position would probably build the same thing. Blaming them doesn't explain why so many people keep making similar choices. ### A map and a Claude glove Two things from my personal experience that show both sides of this spectrum, from different perspectives. I wrote about [making a map for Karen on the flight to Boston](https://aryagarg23.com/writing/the-wibbles). The other thing is one of my co-ops, and how depressing that job was. All day I would get 60-page AI-generated PDFs from my boss, with 70% of the content being repetitive slop. I could have just talked to the model myself. You know? And I used to wonder: if this guy is my boss, and is worth a $20 subscription, why am I being paid $18 an hour to build entire platforms and internal tools for this company? I digress. Karen used the map to explore what she could see from the plane. My boss was a Claude glove. ### Hard work and twenty agents We've always had disadvantages based on class. But I used to believe that being smart and working hard would give me a decent chance. It's getting harder for me to believe that. I can choose to use cash, take public transport or walk. Those choices can make life less convenient, but I can still get by. AI feels different. If someone competing for the same job has 20 AI agents working for them, they can produce far more than I can on my own. I can choose not to use those tools, but working harder won't necessarily let me keep up. When we're judged on how much we produce, understanding the work matters less. You can throw enough compute at it and keep whatever sticks. For someone growing up in a slum, hard work and intelligence never guaranteed a way out. People with more advantages could tell themselves that was an exception. Now more of us are finding that education and hard work don't guarantee a job or a decent income either. I can date when this started bothering me. February 2024, a hackathon, a memory journal for people with dementia called Memento. You ask it where you put your glasses and it goes back through your day. Helping someone remember made sense. But building it was the first time I thought: frictionless would be bad if we applied it to everything. Then we built WhiteBox in September 2024. It answered questions and showed the sources it used. That made more capable AI feel real to me, and it kept me up sometimes. I didn't have the technical experience to work out everything it could become. But I could see how a model might get the context it needed and let us trace where an answer came from. Those had seemed like major obstacles. Models were also getting more capable as they got bigger. That was a big part of why I moved into foresight work. ### The whiplash of normalcy Picture Larry Page. Picture Jensen Huang. A whole career at the edge of tech. Now imagine your friends all work in tech too. You never leave that hyper-tech world, and then you never feel the whiplash of normalcy. I think I do a version of this too. Have 50 happy days and one sad day, and the sad day hits hard. And vice versa. You get used to how your life feels. The term is hedonic adaptation[^upside-cafe-main-16], and research suggests variety and surprise can slow it down. That doesn't prove my point about social circles, but it gives me a way to think about it. Put anyone, me included, in a room where everyone sees the world the same way for long enough and they stop being able to feel how strange their own world is compared with everyone else's. Maybe trivia felt so good because it was so different from how I spend the rest of my time. ### Do we need more friction? I used to think the fix was friction. Make the technology push back. Then someone asked me: do you want friction in producing food? No. Friction and novelty aren't objectively good for society. Nobody deserves to spend their day sitting in a cube comparing one record against another, which is the job I automated away at my first co-op, and I felt accomplished doing it. [Interactive figure: Same destination. Different reasons] What I want is mixing. I want those encounters that make your own world feel strange for a second. That's the whiplash. I think there's learning in it, and I want more people to feel it without having to study futures for a living. That won't always go well. A meta-analysis of 515 studies[^upside-cafe-main-17] found that contact between groups typically reduces prejudice. But research on negative contact[^upside-cafe-main-18] found that bad encounters can be associated with more prejudice. Meeting someone different isn't automatically enough. Our feeds keep showing us people who think like us. Spend enough time there and people outside our group start to seem stupid or impossible to talk to. But they know things we don't, because they've lived different lives and done different work. Someone might understand a problem well and still never get asked about it, because they don't have the right job title or connections. The people making decisions keep asking the same small group for advice, so everyone else has very little say. ### Automating my own field Here is what I did not expect. Futures work, when you boil it down, is finding all these different bubbles people are living in and building towards. Who's building which world? How do those worlds intersect? What causes a bubble to expand into mainstream? Then comes worldbuilding: taking a world that would be shocking, or would seem stupid, and helping people relate to it. But if people just talked to each other, both halves become useless. The bubbles would already know about each other, and no world would seem stupid, because you'd have a friend from it. Criticism would be natural and we futurists would not be needed. Everyone would self-correct. So I started on why automation is bad, boiled everything down to why futurists are needed, and found exactly how to make the world not need futurists anymore. Computer scientists are plagued with automation. Leave me alone long enough and I'll automate my own field. I'm fine with that. Everything I've made unintentionally adds or preserves some aspects of friction. WhiteBox asks you to look at the sources. Lighthouse shows you the bots. Gyrus asks you the question back instead of always answering it. Karen used the map to identify what she was seeing from the plane. None of these tools get people talking to each other. They still depend on the person reading, asking questions and using what they know. I never planned that. The exception is Memento, which was for people with dementia and was supposed to remember for you. ### Learning or ignoring it? Would meeting different people still have that effect if you did it every day? Or would you get used to that too? There have been attempts to get people to pause before using technology automatically. Twitter tested a read-before-retweet prompt in 2020[^upside-cafe-main-19]. During the election it also prompted people to add a comment before retweeting. Twitter reported that retweets and quote-tweets combined fell by 20%, and removed that change in December (Twitter[^upside-cafe-main-20]). In a September 2026 preprint[^upside-cafe-main-21], a preregistered experiment with 704 people found that feedback about their use of an AI assistant roughly halved the odds of asking it for a complete answer while practising fractions. It measured one session. I want to know what happens after people have used something like that for weeks. After weeks of using it, have you learned something, or have you just started ignoring the prompts? I don't know how to tell those apart yet. Every whiplash is supposed to be learning, so if it fades because you learned, this hypothesis could hold true. If it fades because you've started ignoring it, it hasn't helped. I'm experimenting with this on my own site. [Other Minds](https://aryagarg23.com/other-minds) compares how two people think and tries to make their differences easier to understand. ### One more subject The report cards below show what I'd want schools to teach. The future version adds one subject: holding more than one view. I'd want that taught and graded as seriously as maths or science. [Interactive figure: Same card, one more subject] The report card borrows from Robert Kegan's In Over Our Heads[^upside-cafe-main-22], especially his fifth order of mind: being able to examine the limits of your own way of thinking. The school subject is my proposal, not a curriculum Kegan tested. How could schools give students more practice at that? I don't know what a post-automation world is. But the next time I hang out again, I'm going to keep trying my best not to stand on the table. She worked in environmental science. We talked for a few minutes about what we each do. She grew up before the internet. She said technology feels crazy to her now, and she wanted to know where it's going. One thing worries her. In her city the local journalists are shutting down, and big news outlets are taking their place. Local reporters are the ones who cover a high school award or a park clean-up drive. She's afraid that when nobody covers those small things, people will feel isolated, even with all the information they can get to. I do futures work, so I told her about some of the things I've come across. She got a kick out of it. I think of solving a problem as carving a sculpture, and futures work is one kind of problem. You start with power tools. They take off a lot at once and you don't have much control, but you get the general shape. Then you and your team pick up chisels. That part takes expertise and taste, and it's where the details go in. At the end you have the object you needed. [Interactive figure: Big cuts first, then small ones] Then we both went back to our own things. A while later she was looking out the window and said, "I wish I could see what all that stuff out there is." GPS wasn't working on the plane, but we had Wi-Fi, and the plane's Wi-Fi page reports where the plane is. A couple of prompts later I had a live map running. It was a topographic map, the kind she knew from her work with geology, with Wikipedia articles about the places nearby in a panel on the side. That was the first time I've been able to just make something like that on the spot. This is the same map. If you're not on a plane, use your location or click the map to place one. It also has [its own page](https://aryagarg23.com/play/window-seat). [Interactive figure: Window seat] The map was trivial to make. Her reaction to it, and watching her poke around in it, meant the world to me. There is an absurd amount of information out there now. Most of my time goes to solving problems. I think people who know a field should also put some effort into making sure parts of the population don't get left behind. For me that means spending time showing what we do in a simple way, so the tools feel less mysterious. My guess is that once something feels approachable, curiosity does the rest and people start making things with it. It was brief, but I think the two of us built a small community on that plane, by talking and with a bit of tech. At one point Karen said, "Oh, I'm so scared of turbulence. My granddaughter calls it the wibbles." Enthusiastically. Picture your mom saying goodbye at an airport. I waved to maybe 40 people. About four noticed me. On a beautiful fall day, after a couple months of 90°F weather, 90% of campus apparently became zombies. Imagine how much you could do if nobody's paying attention. Go win the day, reader. Do something quirky. Notice how few people notice. Then notice the people who do notice you being weird looking at you weirdly. Everyone wants to be edgy until the opportunity actually shows up. Of the four people who noticed me, one waved back and laughed. Joy is free to share. Literally no reason not to mess with strangers. Edge it out. Cheers. --- # What do we do after we beat the Ender Dragon? By Arya Garg Canonical source: https://aryagarg23.com/writing/after-the-ender-dragon Published: 2026-09-22 Register: Speculative Tags: THOUGHT_EXERCISE Section: [Futures](https://aryagarg23.com/futures) ## Main ### The dragon as a tutorial On September 21, 2026, OpenAI announced[^after-the-ender-dragon-main-1] that an internal model had “resolved more than 100 long-standing open problems across most areas of mathematics.” I thought about Minecraft. You can spend a long time preparing to defeat the Ender Dragon. You find materials, make equipment and learn to survive in unfamiliar places. The dragon gives that preparation a goal. Defeat it, and the credits can roll[^after-the-ender-dragon-main-2]. Then the world is still there. I think of the route to the dragon as a tutorial. The things you learned along the way can also help you build a railway or a city with friends. Minecraft actually starts after you have beaten it. ### Creative mode But suppose an automated player does all of that for me. When I come back the dragon is dead, and I still don’t know anything about Minecraft as a game. Completing the objective didn’t teach me what else I could do there. A hundred reported solutions don’t finish mathematics. But take automation to its extreme: suppose machines become excellent at finding answers, explaining them and suggesting worthwhile questions. I build research tools and spend weekends at hackathons, and I’d gladly automate the setup that keeps me from trying an idea. Minecraft already has a version of this. Creative mode[^after-the-ender-dragon-main-2] hands you the resources, so you learn to build by building. ### The instrument in front of me Suppose I need a bass sound for a track. An assistant could generate a sample, or help me build a small synthesizer. With the synth, I turn a control, hear something unexpected and ask what changed. I’m learning to shape the sound without having to write the audio software. A sample might be all I need to finish the track and go to bed. But even a generated sample could make me curious about how it was made, and then the evening goes to experimenting. I asked for a sound; I did not yet know I would enjoy making sounds. I can’t always describe that interest in advance. Hidi and Renninger[^after-the-ender-dragon-main-5] describe a passing interest growing through further engagement and support. A tool could get me far enough into sound design to find out whether I enjoy it, without deciding that for me or turning every request into a lesson. AI tutoring studies separate getting the right answer with help from doing the next problem alone. Students with a less restricted tool[^after-the-ender-dragon-main-4] did better on practice and worse on the exam without it. A carefully designed tutor[^after-the-ender-dragon-main-4] beat the classroom lessons it was compared with. With the synth, I want to get better at shaping sounds, and continued help with the software lets me do that. ### Widening the cone Imagine a cone containing the questions I can realistically investigate with my current knowledge, resources and time. A useful tool could widen it across fields and deepen it within an unfamiliar one. Some questions mean comparing thousands of papers, more than I could read in a useful timeframe. A system that organizes them and keeps their sources attached lets me follow a connection without holding the whole archive in my head. Don Swanson called what’s waiting there undiscovered public knowledge[^after-the-ender-dragon-main-6]: findings published separately that support a discovery once someone connects them. The connections still need checking. [Interactive figure: Wider across fields. Deeper into each] Something too difficult to try can become an interest once I have a way into it. So automation isn’t a machine working through a fixed list of things humans want. Completing one request can give me a reason to make another I could not have thought of beforehand. Daniel Litt[^after-the-ender-dragon-main-3] distinguishes producing mathematical results from human understanding of them. A proof can be published and still be new to me. An assistant helping me understand it could hand me a question I want to investigate. ### Chosen constraints Not every difficulty is in the way. On the drive to a trailhead, a bypass around the bends leaves more time for the walk. On a Group B rally stage, the bends are what the driver and co-driver came for; remove them and they are competing at something else. Bernard Suits[^after-the-ender-dragon-main-7] calls these the traveler and the racer. [Interactive figure: Same destination. Different reasons] Some friction is part of an activity I chose, and some just gets in my way. I can enjoy experimenting with a recipe and still leave the whisking to a mixer. Nor does every activity need to teach me something. I enjoy music more with friends, even a recording I could play alone; their reactions are part of it, and studies of live music[^after-the-ender-dragon-main-8] link that shared feeling to enjoyment and meaning. I would call the playful part of this whimsy: dancing at a rave, a ridiculous game made up with friends, no need to get better at either. I do not want freedom from work to come with an obligation to spend every spare hour improving ourselves. ### The world we actually have Automating someone’s job does not mean they can afford to stop working. Someone searching for replacement income is in a different position from someone whose hours fell without a pay cut. The same goes for learning at work. If software takes over a report a junior employee used to prepare, their employer could have them dig into the results with an experienced colleague. Or the employer could decide the junior position is no longer needed. There could be more projects worth trying than ever while someone has less money or time to try them. “People can still do it for fun” does not answer that. I would love more time to explore. Someone else might mainly want fewer demands on their day. Pope Leo XIV’s Magnifica Humanitas[^after-the-ender-dragon-main-9] rejects measuring a person’s dignity by their abilities or achievements. Nobody should have to prove they are still useful by replacing their old job with some impressive new pursuit. ### Bounded infinities Between two distinct rational numbers lies another.[^after-the-ender-dragon-main-10] Take the midpoint, then subdivide again; there is always another number, and the interval never grows. Learning the basic rules of a subject works like that for me. It lets me look closer rather than meaning I’m done with it. [Interactive figure: Still room between] Jevons[^after-the-ender-dragon-main-11] argued that burning coal more efficiently could increase how much of it gets burned. Inquiry might go the same way as it gets cheaper: an afternoon instead of a month makes new questions worth asking. Who decides how the saved time gets spent is still open. I could attempt something new, or my employer could expect more of the same work. ### After the dragon After the dragon, I might build a railway that takes longer to construct than walking to its destination ever would. A machine could lay the track while a friend and I design the station. We might get carried away and start building a town around it instead. By the end of the afternoon, reaching the original destination could be the least interesting part. When does getting distracted become finding something worth doing? The brief was open-ended, so we deleted the constraints and used the event to imagine what a keyboard could be if it wasn't just a dumb input device. Most feedback from a computer comes back as more information, like a warning, a notification, a timer, or a number turning red. We tried making the feedback physical instead. A key could get harder to press. The wrist rest could change temperature. Instead of giving you another thing to look at, the thing you're already touching would change. My part was mostly high-fidelity interaction work. I wanted to get really specific about what happens when the state changes: what moves, what becomes obvious, what the user can override, and what happens when the system is wrong. Here's the prototype. It's a pretend Windows laptop with Friction running on it. The sliders on the left stand in for the sensors, and the three stories walk through what Friction does. [Interactive figure: Friction prototype] This is the deck we made for it. Arrow keys or swipe to move through it. [Interactive figure: Friction slide deck] The broader research came out of some of the same cognitive-load questions behind Clay/Gyrus, but Friction took the interaction down into the keyboard and the operating system. We didn't build the final keyboard during the event, and we missed the submission. ## Technical | Friction sensing concept | | --- | | Possible sensing inputs (eye movement / posture / other signals) | | ↓ | | Local state estimate | | ↓ | | Interaction logic | | ↓ | | UI response ‖ Magnetic key force ‖ Wrist-rest temperature | | ↓ | | Physical feedback | | Friction event prototype | | --- | | Manually supplied focus / fatigue state | | ↓ | | React / Vite simulated desktop OS | | ↓ | | UI + keyboard-response simulation | ![The sensing-to-friction loop, local to the keyboard, speculative design](https://aryagarg23.com/figures/friction/intervention_loop.png) ![The load framework from the Clay notes: cut extraneous and intrinsic load, grow germane](https://aryagarg23.com/figures/friction/load_framework.png) The working artifact was a high-fidelity browser/simulated-desktop prototype built in React/Vite from the Figma Make work. Focus and fatigue values were entered by hand in the event prototype. Those values drove the interface changes and stood in for the proposed keyboard response. The physical concept used variable key resistance and wrist-rest heat as output channels. The broader concept looked at sensing through smooth-pursuit eye movement and RF/posture signals, with local processing and explicit calibration stages. The event prototype didn't implement or validate a reliable way to infer focus or fatigue from those signals. So the software prototyped the response/interaction layer separately from the proposed sensing hardware.[^friction-technical-1] [^friction-technical-1]: [Friction repository](https://github.com/Aryagarg23/Friction) --- # Gyrus — agents working alongside your browsing By Arya Garg Canonical source: https://aryagarg23.com/writing/gyrus Archive date: 2025-07 (historical site date; not a verified publication date) Register: Technical Tags: HACK, SPEC_ART Section: [Hackathons](https://aryagarg23.com/about#hackathons) Field notes from its future: https://aryagarg23.com/futures/gyrus ## Main Raihan Rafeek, Kaaustaaub Shankar and I had built enough AI things by then that the easiest kind of AI help was starting to bug me. You ask a question, get an answer and move on. If a tool keeps taking away the work that helps you understand a subject, you can end up with a good answer and no idea how you got there. Gyrus was our try at going the other way. Your browser already knows a lot about what you're trying to do. It has the query you started with, the tabs you opened, the source that led you to the next one, and the page you kept coming back to. Then you open some other AI app and explain the whole task again from scratch. So we put the agents inside the browser. Your browsing gave them context. Different agent crews could gather material, organise it, quiz you, or do other work based on what you were doing. You could talk to them through an in-browser CLI without moving the task somewhere else. Here's the browser in demo mode. There's no backend behind it, so the sources the crew finds are stand-in pages, but the search, the sorting and the memory graph work the way they did. [Interactive figure: Gyrus prototype] The Devpost describes it as using AI to support thinking instead of replacing it. The browser was how we tried to do that. Gyrus started out as Clay. We renamed it for the hackathon in case Weights & Biases minded the name. Some of that research later carried on into Friction, with a different group and a very different interface. ## Technical | Gyrus flow | | --- | | Electron browser | | ↓ | | Browsing metadata / page context | | ↓ | | PII scrubbing | | ↓ | | Intent routing | | ↓ | | Neo4j memory graph | | ↓ | | Agent router | | ↓ | | CrewAI workflows | | ↓ | | Search ‖ Research ‖ Sensemaking | | ↓ | | GDELT / NewsAPI / Exa / Semantic Scholar / arXiv | | ↓ | | Collected material | | ↓ | | Weave tracing + stored context | | ↓ | | In-browser CLI / browser UI | ![How a browsing signal becomes an assist action: PII scrubbing, memory graph plus intent classifier, crews. Browsing metadata and the current page's context went to an intent-routing layer. The project experimented with a classifier trained/fine-tuned around the ORCAS-II query-intent dataset, about two million entries. Neo4j stored the relationships between queries, concepts, browsing history, and retrieved material. CrewAI orchestrated task-specific agent workflows, and LangChain components were used around memory/reasoning. The external retrieval layer included GDELT, NewsAPI, Exa, Semantic Scholar and arXiv. Weave traced agent execution. Raihan Rafeek built the PII-obfuscation layer that ran before information entered the memory path. The user talked to the system through an in-browser command-line interface while still browsing inside the same app.[^gyrus-technical-1][^gyrus-technical-2] [^gyrus-technical-1]: [Gyrus — Devpost](https://devpost.com/software/gyrus-an-agentic-browser-to-increase-intelligence) [^gyrus-technical-2]: [Current repository](https://github.com/Aryagarg23/Gyrus) ## Personal We flew to San Francisco for WeaveHacks. Then I noticed Kinetic Vision had a 3D printer as the prize, and only one other three-person team was competing in the category. So I changed my mind. I'd worked with inkjet-printer firmware before, so the problem felt a lot more familiar than most hackathon prompts did by then. The challenge was to reconstruct a 3D object from G-code. A printer never needs the original CAD model. It only gets the instructions it needs to make the object: coordinates, extrusion, layer heights and travel moves. So the shape is in there, just backwards. I treated the depositing moves as physical filament again, rebuilt the volumes, joined them, and exported the result as an STL. I did this one solo, so I have a lot of implementation detail if I ever want to get into it. Here's the assembler running in the browser, with no server. I rebuilt it in 2026. Next to the hackathon's box mesh it now makes one closed solid out of the printed beads, within about 1% of the challenge's own CAD models, and it reads G-code from Bambu, Prusa, Cura and other slicers. [Interactive figure: G-Code Assembler] ## Technical | G-Code Assembler flow | | --- | | G-code file | | ↓ | | Command parser | | ↓ | | Motion + extrusion + layer state | | ↓ | | Depositing segments selected | | ↓ | | Path segments converted to filament volumes | | ↓ | | Boolean union / overlap handling | | ↓ | | Layer-transition smoothing | | ↓ | | Watertight mesh | | ↓ | | React / three.js preview | | ↓ | | STL export | ![A seven layer square spiral toolpath parsed and drawn per layer](https://aryagarg23.com/figures/g-code-assembler/toolpath.png) ![Per layer extrusion length profile of the toy toolpath](https://aryagarg23.com/figures/g-code-assembler/extrusion_profile.png) Flask handled G-code parsing and the mesh transformations. The parser pulled out movement coordinates, extrusion values and layer state. Travel moves were left out of the geometry. Depositing moves were turned into volumetric filament segments. Neighbouring segments were joined with boolean operations. Overlap correction accounted for filament volumes that intersect. Additional geometry went in around layer transitions to smooth the rebuilt surface, with stronger correction around steeper slopes. React and three.js rendered the preview, and the final mesh was exported as a watertight STL. Large input files made meshes with millions of nodes. One hackathon example was big enough to use up all the memory on a 3090 Ti.[^g-code-assembler-technical-1][^g-code-assembler-technical-2][^g-code-assembler-technical-3] [^g-code-assembler-technical-1]: [G-Code Assembler — Devpost](https://devpost.com/software/g-code-assembler) [^g-code-assembler-technical-2]: [Repository](https://github.com/Aryagarg23/G-Code-Assembler) [^g-code-assembler-technical-3]: [Demo](https://youtu.be/q7wP98uev2o) ## Personal I wanted the printer. Same music, same school, same game or movie, or the same pile of interest tags. I was more interested in whether two people could have something in common in how they think, even when what they're thinking about is different. I can know nothing about your hobby and still recognise the way you make an association. Raihan Rafeek, Shawn Lasrado, Shashwat and I built Hi-Five at SASEhack, two weekends before Terminally Addicted. After WhiteBox I was already deep into the idea that you could fabricate useful representations of messy things. Hi-Five took that out of research material and tried it on people. We used OCEAN as scaffolding and added our own dimensions around the responses. Then we mixed that with interests and matched people using the representation we'd built. You didn't get someone's whole profile first. You got the conversation. The match stayed anonymous for 48 hours, and then both people could decide whether they wanted to reveal themselves and keep going. What I wanted to test was whether I could fabricate an entirely new dimension of data and make it useful. [Interactive figure: Match rankings] ## Technical | Hi-Five flow | | --- | | 5 prompt responses | | ↓ | | OCEAN-inspired feature construction | | ↓ | | BGE-en-icl text embeddings + RoBERTa emotion features | | ↓ | | ~24-dimensional user representation | | ↓ | | Vector similarity × 0.6 + Interest overlap × 0.4 | | ↓ | | Candidate match | | ↓ | | Neo4j relationship | | ↓ | | 48-hour anonymous conversation | | ↓ | | Mutual reveal / continue | ![Assessment to embedding to 48-hour anonymous window to reveal, the flow as designed](https://aryagarg23.com/figures/hi-five/matching_flow.png) The matching system started from five assessment-style prompts and user interest tags. Prompt responses were processed using an OCEAN-inspired feature scheme, BGE-en-icl text embeddings, RoBERTa-base-go-emotions outputs, and some extra custom processing. The resulting features were combined into an approximately 24-dimensional user representation. The match score weighted embedding similarity at 0.6 and interest overlap at 0.4 in the implementation captured by the older repository. Neo4j stored users and relationships. Matched users entered a 48-hour anonymous conversation period before a mutual reveal decision. The representation was experimental. It wasn't a validated personality or compatibility model.[^hi-five-technical-1][^hi-five-technical-2] [^hi-five-technical-1]: [Hi-Five — Devpost](https://devpost.com/software/hi-five-dt0gvj) [^hi-five-technical-2]: [Original team repository](https://github.com/Aryagarg23/Hi-Five) --- # Terminally Addicted — video, audio, and everything else in a terminal By Arya Garg Canonical source: https://aryagarg23.com/writing/terminally-addicted Archive date: 2024-10 (historical site date; not a verified publication date) Register: Technical Tags: HACK Section: [Hackathons](https://aryagarg23.com/about#hackathons) ## Main At HackOHI/O, Raihan Rafeek, Kaaustaaub Shankar and I wanted to make a joke. Then we decided the joke should be unnecessarily difficult to build. Terminally Addicted put Spotify, GitHub issues, Todoist, GPT chat, Vim and YouTube inside one curses-based terminal. The YouTube player drew the video as ASCII and terminal colour while the audio played normally. I'm not going to argue this is the best way to watch YouTube, because it's worse. My part of the project was mostly the architecture. I wanted to keep bolting unrelated pieces onto the same system without each new piece breaking the old ones or slowing the whole thing down. Spotify is one kind of state, GitHub issues are another, and a chatbot has its own interaction pattern. Then video shows up, and now you have screen ownership, input ownership, a renderer, audio, timing, cleanup and background work all fighting inside one terminal. We won Most Original. ## Technical | Terminally Addicted shell | | --- | | Python / curses shell | | ↓ | | Spotify API ‖ GitHub REST API ‖ Todoist API ‖ OpenAI chat ‖ Vim ‖ YouTube | | Terminally Addicted YouTube playback | | --- | | yt-dlp | | ↓ | | Decoded video frames | | ↓ | | Go ASCII renderer | | ↓ | | Terminal frames ‖ Audio playback | | ↓ | | Sync loop | | ↓ | | Curses UI restored | ![Every command surface in one terminal window](https://aryagarg23.com/figures/terminally-addicted/command_map.png) Python and curses ran the main terminal interface and command routing. $sp controlled Spotify. $git created, closed and commented on GitHub issues. $todo connected to Todoist. $chat used the OpenAI integration. /set env opened the environment config in Vim. For video playback, yt-dlp fetched the media. Video frames went to a Go renderer that turned pixel information into ASCII characters and terminal colour values. Audio playback ran separately. The renderer and the audio path were kept in sync while the curses shell kept managing terminal state and input. Playback cleanup handed screen and input ownership back to the shell when playback ended or got interrupted.[^terminally-addicted-technical-1][^terminally-addicted-technical-2] [^terminally-addicted-technical-1]: [Terminally Addicted repository](https://github.com/Aryagarg23/Terminally-Addicted) [^terminally-addicted-technical-2]: [Demo](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SqKeySB5aBU) --- # WhiteBox — following an answer back to its sources By Arya Garg Canonical source: https://aryagarg23.com/writing/whitebox Archive date: 2024-09 (historical site date; not a verified publication date) Register: Technical Tags: HACK, SPEC_ART Section: [Hackathons](https://aryagarg23.com/about#hackathons) ## Main By WhiteBox, a few things I'd been playing with started turning into the same problem. Memento had retrieval. I'd also gotten more interested in giving messy information some structure instead of treating everything as plain text. When a model generates an answer, a lot of the research gets squashed into it. If the answer is wrong, or the part you cared about got dropped along the way, you can't get back to it. For WhiteBox we took a medical textbook and built it into a graph before anyone asked a question. Concepts linked back to the passages they came from. Different names for the same thing could be merged into one. Relationships the textbook stated outright stayed as relationships in the graph, instead of getting lost in a chunk of text. Then the chat answer wasn't the end. You could go into the graph and keep working through the material yourself. I don't want provenance to be a tiny citation badge under a finished answer. I want enough of the work left behind that people can check it, go off in another direction, reuse it somewhere else, or decide the generated answer was wrong in the first place. The team was me, Kaaustaaub Shankar and Raihan Rafeek, the same crew from Memento and later Gyrus. [Interactive figure: Answer sources] ## Technical | WhiteBox flow | | --- | | Davidson's medical textbook | | ↓ | | Entity / relationship extraction | | ↓ | | Clustering + latent representations | | ↓ | | Neo4j knowledge graph | | ↓ | | User question | | ↓ | | MiniLM-assisted retrieval | | ↓ | | Relevant graph nodes + source passages | | ↓ | | Phi-3 generation | | ↓ | | Answer + source / relationship visualization | ![A traced answer path through a toy medical knowledge graph, real walk on a stated toy example](https://aryagarg23.com/figures/whitebox/traced_path.png) ![The WhiteBox pipeline as built: textbook to Neo4j graph to traced answer](https://aryagarg23.com/figures/whitebox/pipeline.png) In the hackathon version the textbook turned into roughly 60,000 nodes and 130,000 relationships in Neo4j. A fine-tuned LLaMA 3.1 8B did the summarization/classification during graph construction. MiniLM embeddings supported Cypher retrieval over the graph. Phi-3 3.8B handled the response/deeper-analysis pass on retrieved subgraphs. Semantic similarity and relationships stated in the source were kept separate. A concept being semantically similar didn't make it a causal or relational edge. Flask served the backend and vis.js rendered the graph/path visualization. | Team split | | | --- | --- | | Raihan Rafeek | database and API work | | Kaaustaaub Shankar | RAG pipeline | | Arya Garg | open-source model selection, fine-tuning and representation work | The Devpost wording for my role was “opensource model scout and fine tune monkey!!”.[^whitebox-technical-1][^whitebox-technical-2] [^whitebox-technical-1]: [WhiteBox — Devpost](https://devpost.com/software/whitebox-zn5u2q) [^whitebox-technical-2]: [Original repository](https://github.com/Aryagarg23/WhiteBox) ## Personal The database had to be recreated twice, and GitHub went down while we were trying to merge. The internet got bad enough that we physically moved the server to 1819 in a red suitcase. Neo4j was great for storing the graph and horrible for the interactive visualization we were trying to force on top of it. I remember being really annoyed at that. We won first place. I knew the idea was cool. Other people thought the idea was cool. I had no clue how to move from cool to okay, who actually pays for this? After WhiteBox I took a break from serious hackathon building. I was spending more time in NIS and doing much more abstract work than trying to win another weekend. --- # Memento — asking questions of a journal By Arya Garg Canonical source: https://aryagarg23.com/writing/memento Archive date: 2024-02 (historical site date; not a verified publication date) Register: Technical Tags: HACK, SPEC_ART Section: [Hackathons](https://aryagarg23.com/about#hackathons) Field notes from its future: https://aryagarg23.com/futures/memento ![Render of Memento on a phone in an older man's hands, showing an empty journal that says Make Some Mementos. Render by Grant Kilgard](https://aryagarg23.com/figures/memento/hero.jpg) ## Main Raihan Rafeek, Kaaustaaub Shankar, Grant Kilgard and I mostly started because we wanted to work together. We were making a dance app. More computer vision. There was a loose chain of projects going, mostly because we kept finding another excuse to use whatever we'd just learned: SignLink, KUKA, and now another computer vision thing for people. Then Grant brought up a real problem. His grandfather had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's, and his grandmother had gotten involved in advocacy around Alzheimer's and related dementia. We spoke with her, scrapped the dance app, and started working on memory. What bugged me about a normal journal is that you still have to remember enough to find the thing you forgot. You need the date, or the right keyword, or the entry itself. With Memento the question was the index. You could ask "Where did I put my glasses?", "What did I do Tuesday?" or "Who visited last week?" The journal could hold text, photos, audio and location. The person or a caregiver records the day. Later the user asks about whatever they still remember enough to ask about, and the system goes back through the record. There was also a side for clinicians. If the same question kept coming up, we wanted that repetition to show up as a pattern over time instead of getting lost in separate conversations. Sharing that with a caregiver or doctor was opt-in. Grant led the design. He worked out the whole app in Figma, from onboarding to adding photos, places and voice notes to an entry, and then handed it to the rest of us to build. These are his screens. ![Memento's journal screen, empty and with entries, in the light and orange themes. Repeated-question tracking counted matched intents that kept coming back over time, for the clinician-facing view. We tried React Native and SwiftUI/Xcode for the interface before finishing the working version as a React web app scaled for mobile. We went hard on the interface renders and just didn't have the frontend skill to build all of them. The working app could do the important path, but I could see the experience we'd designed sitting next to it and knew how much was missing. ![Grant's clickable prototype, screen by screen, from onboarding to a finished journal entry](https://aryagarg23.com/figures/memento/prototype_flow.jpg) We placed third overall and won Best Social Impact, the Medpace clinical-trial-process challenge, and Best Use of Postgres. We ended up talking about perception. The same information doesn't mean the same thing to everybody. Your past experience and your values change how you read it. Even if two people agree on the facts, they can make different decisions from them. So I didn't want the app to be a moral traffic light. A barcode scanner that says BUY or DON'T BUY is fast, but the software is quietly making the most important decision for you. We wanted to do something narrower. The app would scan the barcode, work out which parent company is behind the product, find the reporting about that company, and cut it down enough that somebody standing in an aisle could get the top line. The judgment stayed with them. I don't think you need a huge amount of information to make a purchase decision. You need the right amount for the decision you're making. Kaaustaaub, Ary Sharma, Aniruddhan Ramesh and I built the prototype at MakeUC. [Interactive figure: Product owners] ## Technical | Buycott flow | | --- | | Barcode | | ↓ | | Product identification | | ↓ | | Parent-company resolution | | ↓ | | GDELT news queries | | ↓ | | Entity extraction / mapping | | ↓ | | RoBERTa stance + sentiment outputs | | ↓ | | Headline structure rules (subject → action → attributed entity) | | ↓ | | Grouped article clusters | | ↓ | | Flutter mobile interface | ![From barcode to sourced stance card, the pipeline as built](https://aryagarg23.com/figures/buycott/pipeline.png) The barcode-to-product path used Google Vision tooling. Product information was resolved to a parent company before the news lookup. GDELT supplied company-related reporting, and a scheduled pull kept tagged coverage available. The NLP layer combined entity mapping with sentiment processing and a RoBERTa classifier trained for article stance on the war. Sentiment alone couldn't tell us the company's role in the event being reported. A company criticising an action and a company being criticised for that action can both show up in strongly negative language. So the extra processing used headline structure: subject, action, and attributed entity. The processed articles were grouped into company-level views, with the source articles still attached. The client was built in Flutter. Flask handled the backend/API layer, and the model/backend services were deployed through Google Cloud.[^buycott-technical-1][^buycott-technical-2] [^buycott-technical-1]: [Buycott — Devpost](https://devpost.com/software/buycott) [^buycott-technical-2]: [Original repository](https://github.com/Aryagarg23/Buycott) ## Personal We won first overall. I was still ridiculously salty about how useless I'd felt at Purdue, internship season was happening, and I'd already collected a decent pile of interview rejections. I wanted a job at Kinetic Vision. They had a sponsor challenge at RevolutionUC, so I said we were going to win it. I gaslit Kaaustaaub “Kaus” Shankar into believing the internship was basically guaranteed if we won, and rallied the troops with Alexander Van Bibber. The challenge was joint data for a seven-axis KUKA arm, sitting in MATLAB files. They wanted a way to look at it. We built the arm in Unity, put it in the browser, gave every joint a slider, and replayed the recorded movement on the same model. Partway through we called Akhil Penumudy as an SOS because we had no idea how to rig the objects to code in Unity. My part was the inverse kinematics. A seven-axis arm can reach the same position with a bunch of different joint configurations. We narrowed down the solutions, kept a configuration that was geometrically close to where the arm already was, and prepared the motion path from there. That side went surprisingly smoothly. I knew almost nothing about UI/UX, so I slapped an isometric viewer onto the demo and surrounded it with enough controls and information to make it usable. I still find that funny. I wanted everything on screen: all seven joints, the path, and the data moving. [Interactive figure: KUKA arm] ## Technical | KUKA playback flow | | --- | | Kinetic Vision joint / CSV data | | ↓ | | Shared joint-state model | | ↓ | | Manual sliders ‖ Recorded playback | | ↓ | | Unity arm hierarchy | | ↓ | | WebGL viewer | | KUKA inverse-kinematics flow | | --- | | Target position | | ↓ | | Inverse-kinematics candidate solutions | | ↓ | | Geometric filtering against current pose | | ↓ | | Selected joint configuration | | ↓ | | Prepared motion path | ![Workspace reachability cloud of a planar 3-link arm with one inverse kinematics solution drawn](https://aryagarg23.com/figures/kuka-arm-viz/reachability_cloud.png) ![Joint angle traces over a reach trajectory](https://aryagarg23.com/figures/kuka-arm-viz/joint_angle_traces.png) The seven-axis arm was modeled in Unity as a hierarchy of joint transforms. Rotating a lower joint changed the coordinate frame for every joint attached after it. The Kinetic Vision movement data was converted into joint states that could be replayed through the same hierarchy the manual sliders used. For inverse kinematics, one target position could produce several valid joint configurations. Candidate solutions were filtered by geometric similarity to the current arm state, so the selected solution stayed close to the existing pose. The 3D assets were put together in Unity, with models prepared in tools including Blender, Fusion 360 and RoboDK. The project was exported from Unity to WebGL for the browser demo. In 2026 the arm was rebuilt as a plain web page, the one above. It draws the KUKA LBR iiwa models from the challenge in the same isometric view and plays the ten recorded runs from the dataset, with each joint's angle, speed and torque. The inverse kinematics now works on all seven joints and starts from the current pose, so the arm moves the least it can. The Unity build is gone from the repository.[^kuka-arm-viz-technical-1][^kuka-arm-viz-technical-2] [^kuka-arm-viz-technical-1]: [Visualizing Kuka 7 Node Robot Arm — Devpost](https://devpost.com/software/visualizing-kuka-7-node-robot-arm) [^kuka-arm-viz-technical-2]: [Original repository](https://github.com/Aryagarg23/Visualizing-Kuka-7-Node-Robot-Arm) ## Personal We won Kinetic Vision's Robotic Data Visualization challenge. We also won Best Domain Name for howardgotinastickysituationwithspacearm.tech. Winning the sponsor challenge didn't turn into a Kinetic Vision job. I did get to talk with Scott Fasone, though. He gave me useful guidance on how to organise and present myself, and I remember that conversation a lot more than whatever follow-up I expected from the company. At the time I came out of the weekend feeling like a noobie developer who'd learned how to slap together junk that worked. I was excited to make more junk. --- # SignLink — recognising hand shapes at my first hackathon By Arya Garg Canonical source: https://aryagarg23.com/writing/signlink Archive date: 2023-01 (historical site date; not a verified publication date) Register: Technical Tags: HACK Section: [Hackathons](https://aryagarg23.com/about#hackathons) ## Main Arleen Monteiro randomly invited me to BoilerMake X about four months into college. Reeve Fernandes, Arleen and I went in wanting to collect an ASL dataset and train a model on it, then put the recognition into a video call. I had basically no idea what was possible with a computer back then. I was mostly hands off on the rest of the app. I ended up on the ML setup because that was the part I wanted to figure out. Most of the weekend was me failing to get that version working. My laptop was too weak for what I was trying to run, and the TensorFlow and library setup kept turning into its own problem. With four or five hours left we finally stopped digging. MediaPipe could already give us the shape of a hand, so we changed the problem. Instead of training the computer to recognise signs, we took the landmarks, calculated the finger and joint angles, and compared them against a set of hand shapes we'd defined ourselves. It only worked for some letters, and it could break on a different hand. Anything based on movement was basically out. But the browser call worked, and the recognition worked well enough to demo. Before that weekend, getting stuck mostly meant going deeper into whatever I'd already picked. At BoilerMake we ran out of time and had to search broader. I'd probably make some A* versus BFS analogy for that now. I definitely wasn't making that analogy four months into college. [Hand-angle sketch: a synthetic hand runs the landmarks -> angles -> letter-dictionary pipeline with no camera. The optional camera downloads model resources and requests camera access; everything stays in your browser] ## Technical | SignLink flow | | --- | | Camera | | ↓ | | OpenCV frame capture | | ↓ | | MediaPipe hand landmarks | | ↓ | | Relative finger / joint angles | | ↓ | | Hand-written pose dictionary | | ↓ | | Recognised letter | | ↓ | | PeerJS / WebRTC call interface | ![Camera frame to caption: MediaPipe landmarks, joint angles, nearest ASL pose](https://aryagarg23.com/figures/signlink/recognition_flow.png) MediaPipe supplied 21 hand landmarks from the camera feed. The matcher used 20 of those points and calculated relative joint angles with vector geometry and trigonometry. The resulting angle vector was compared against a hand-written table of supported ASL letter poses. The recognised pose was mapped to a letter and shown inside the browser video-call interface. PeerJS handled the peer connections and WebRTC carried the video/audio stream. The original trained-model path was dropped during the hackathon after the team couldn't get the TensorFlow training/toolchain setup running on the available hardware. Static poses were the practical limit of the submitted version, and motion-dependent signs such as J and Z weren't covered by the same lookup method.[^signlink-technical-1][^signlink-technical-2] [^signlink-technical-1]: [SignLink — Devpost](https://devpost.com/software/signlink) [^signlink-technical-2]: [Original repository](https://github.com/Aryagarg23/SignLink) ## Personal Greyhound six hours there. What is it? A keyboard that changes how the keys and wrist rest feel when you need a break. Try it: [Friction](https://aryagarg23.com/play/friction) Another reminder to take a break. It's easy to dismiss a break reminder and keep typing. Friction puts the reminder in the keyboard: the keys get heavier as you get tired, and the wrist rest changes temperature. You can override it. The keyboard might have read you wrong, or you might just need to finish something. It still has to work as a keyboard. The demo runs on a pretend Windows laptop. Try the three stories or move the focus and fatigue sliders yourself. Those sliders stand in for sensors. The physical keyboard hasn't been built. What is it? A browser with AI agents that help you find sources, connect ideas and check what you understand. Try it: [Gyrus](https://aryagarg23.com/play/gyrus) Studying with too many tabs open. Your notes are in one tab, a paper is in another, and asking an AI for help means explaining everything again. Gyrus puts the agents in the browser, where they can work with the pages you're already reading. It can also ask you questions. Getting one wrong gives you a reason to reopen the source and figure out what you missed. The demo has two sample sources and a set of questions. You can read, connect and revisit them. It doesn't run live AI agents. How might we use AI to help someone work through what they’re learning? Built at WeaveHacks: Agent Protocols Hackathon (MCP, A2A). A journal is awkward if the thing you're struggling with is remembering. You still have to know when something happened, or what word to search for. Memento lets you ask the question you have: where did we have lunch? Who visited last week? The answer points back to your entries, so you can check the note or photo yourself. The concept also includes sharing repeated questions with a caregiver, if you choose to. The demo starts with nine entries from a made-up week. Add an entry and ask about it in Chat to try the search. How might we help someone find a memory with the little they still remember? Built at RevolutionUC 2024. These are two report cards for the same student, five years apart. The second has an extra subject: holding more than one view. It gets a grade, just like maths or science. Before a debate, students write the other side's best argument and let that side grade it. They have to name their assumptions and say what would change their mind. Tap a standard on the card to see the exercise behind it. The school, student and grades are made up. The card came out of the Upside Cafe piece, and the idea that understanding people you disagree with is something you could practise at school.
